With cases on the rise in Tokyo and within the Summer Games community, staging the Olympics and Paralympic Games could be a disaster. Restrictions and fears have combined to influence athletes' decision to participate. What's saddest is that the Games are intended to unite athletes from nations big and small.
Yet, athletes are required to distance themselves from one another. One story this week has focused on athletes' arrival and finding cardboard bed frames. Officials say that is because the beds will be recycled after the Games.
Others say beds were deed to support just one person — a means to discourage really close contact between athletes. And those condoms that will distributed anyway? Save as a souvenir or use back home, athletes.
The health cautions being taken this summer are a reminder that while Texas may be open for business, it's not that way everywhere. Testing, isolation, wearing masks, distancing - all those things we were doing a year ago are in play through Aug. There will be no crowds. And that is disappointing for a host nation, which usually gets a boost in the medal count as fans cheer their athletes.

But with this Olympics, baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and, our favorite, surfing, have been added to the list.
Despite the obstacles, which seem to increase each year, the Games go on. We'll watch with great interest, ready to chant "USA! Some of our greatest sports memories come from the Olympics. Our women's soccer team. Well, in years. Though the Olympics officially starts July 23, competition has begun and Sweden soured U. Athletes helping up athletes who have fallen, or inspiring athletes who are spent physically to make it to the finish line. A bobsled team from Jamaica? A ski-jumping competitor from Great Britain?
Let the games begin and hopefully completed
We thrill at those scenarios. But let's let the athletes compete.
Empty venues won't help generate inspiration, but that's the way it's going to be. Some say having an Olympics while a pandemic persists is foolish.
